What are arteries and what are their main characteristics in the human circulatory system?

Arteries are special blood vessels in the human body that help move blood away from the heart to other parts of the body.
Characteristics of Arteries:
1. Carry Blood Away from the Heart
Arteries always transport blood from the heart to the rest of the body.
2. Carry Oxygenated Blood (with one exception)
Most arteries carry oxygen-rich blood.
The only exception is the pulmonary artery, which carries deoxygenated blood to the lungs.
3. Thick and Strong Walls
Arteries have thick muscular walls to handle the high pressure of blood being pumped by the heart.
4. Narrow Inner Space (Lumen)
The space inside the artery, where the blood flows, is narrow, which helps maintain high pressure.
5. No Valves
Arteries do not have valves because the blood is already under high pressure and always flows in one direction.
6. Located Deep Inside the Body
Most arteries are found deep under the skin for protection, as damage to them can cause heavy bleeding.
