Fungi are important in many ways. Even though they do not have chlorophyll or make their own food, they help people and nature in the following ways:
1. Used in baking
Yeast, a type of fungus, is used to make bread and other baked goods rise and become soft.
2. Used as food
Some mushrooms are edible (safe to eat) and are grown as food. They are nutritious and tasty.
3. Used to make medicine
Some fungi, like moulds, are used to make important medicines such as antibiotics, which help to treat infections.
4. Help in decomposition
Fungi like mould and mushrooms help break down dead plants and animals, returning nutrients to the soil. This process improves soil fertility and helps plants grow.
5. Used in fermentation
Some fungi are used in fermentation, a process that helps in making drinks like traditional beer and certain foods.
