How are isotopes similar and different?
Powered by Froala Editor
Isotopes are atoms of the same element that have the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons.
NB - Every atom of an element must have the same number of protons — that’s what makes it that element.
However, atoms can have more or fewer neutrons, which affects the mass number.
Since mass number = protons + neutrons, any change in neutrons changes the mass number.
Similarities of isotopes
The Number of Protons and Electrons (if neutral atoms) will remain the same
The Chemical properties of the isotopes will remain mostly the same.
Differences of isotopes
The Number of Neutrons and the Mass number of the atom will be different.
