Answer

The nucleus is the small, dense (heavy) centre of an atom. Even though it is very tiny compared to the whole atom, it contains almost all the mass of the atom.

The nucleus is made up of two types of subatomic particles:

1. Protons

Charge: Positive (+1)

Mass: Protons are heavy compared to electrons and add to the mass of the atom.

2. Neutrons

Charge: No charge (they are neutral)

Mass: Neutrons have almost the same mass as protons, so they also contribute to the weight of the atom.
